Anti-theft sofware for Android smartphones

Bitdefender, a Romanian security firm, presented an anti-theft software for Android devices.

The product is intended to track the stolen or lost device and allows the owner to connect to it remotely, use controls such as locating, wiping and locking the device from the internet and also enables the user to activate those commands via SMS.

This approach is not necessarily fool-proof, as the thief will remove the SIM card, disconnect the device from the internet and try to uninstall the software if discovered.

So the company have added a new component that will allow the owner to control the device via SMS, WiFi and GPS.

The SMS service can work only via "trusted number", previously nominated by the owner.

The first thing the owner needs to do when installing the software is to enter a phone number of a relative or friend, so the stolen device can be located and controlled via SMS from the friend's number if there are no internet connections available.

The Bitdefender software has the ability to pull out the new SIM information and send the data to the trusted number, so the thief's details can be revealed once the new SIM is inserted.

The software is hidden from the installed programs list and requires PIN to access it and so it can prevent uninstallation. It also includes protection from viruses, Trojans and phishing.
